How to Measure for Custom Curtains
Getting the width and length right is the one thing that matters for made-to-measure curtains. It takes about 5 minutes with a steel tape measure — here's exactly how to do it.
- 1
Tools you need
- A steel tape measure (cloth tapes stretch and give inaccurate readings)
- A step ladder if your rod is high
- A notepad or phone to record your numbers in inches
- 2
Measure the width
Measure the full width of your window frame or curtain rod from end to end. Then decide how far past the window you want the curtains to extend on each side — a few extra inches per side gives better light blocking and a fuller, more finished look.
Add those extensions to both sides of your window width. That total coverage width is the number to plan around when deciding how many panels you need and how wide each one should be.
- 3
Understand fullness
Curtains look best when the total fabric width is wider than the space it covers. This is called fullness.
For example, 2× fullness means the combined width of all your panels is twice the coverage width — so a 60-inch window with 2× fullness needs 120 inches of fabric total. Satin drapes beautifully at 1.5× to 2× fullness.
You enter the exact width of each individual panel in the configurator, so divide your total fabric width by the number of panels to get the per-panel width to enter.

Measure the length
First decide where your rod will sit. Mounting it several inches above the window frame — or even closer to the ceiling — makes the room feel taller and the window look larger.
Once you know the rod position, measure straight down from the rod to where you want the curtains to end. Three common lengths:
Just below the sillClean and practical — good for kitchens or radiators beneath the window.Just above the floorThe most versatile look. Leave about half an inch of clearance.Lightly touching the floorA soft, relaxed puddle. Add 1–2 inches to your measurement. - 5
Enter your numbers
The configurator asks for the exact width and height of each panel in inches. Measure twice before entering your numbers — once cut, the panels are made to your specification.
Use whole inches or half-inches. Do not round to the nearest foot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- !Measuring only the glass pane instead of the full coverage width including the extensions past the frame.
- !Forgetting to decide the rod height before measuring the length — the drop changes depending on where the rod sits.
- !Rounding to the nearest foot. Always use exact inches; a few inches of difference is visible once the curtains are hung.
