What Color Curtains Make a House Look Bigger?
What color curtains make a room look bigger? Light tones, tone-on-tone walls, and high mounts all help. Here is what actually works and why.
Color is one of several things that affect how large a room feels, and curtains are a big enough surface that the choice matters. Here is what actually works.
Light colors open a room up
Light curtains, Cream White, Off-White, Milk Tea, or Warm Sand, reflect more light and recede visually. They make the window feel like part of the wall rather than a heavy object hanging on it. In a small room, that matters.
Dark curtains do the opposite. They advance and add weight, which can make a room feel more enclosed. That is not always wrong, a cozy bedroom benefits from it, but it is the opposite of making a room feel bigger.
Tone-on-tone with the walls
Curtains that are close in tone to the walls make the room feel more continuous. The eye does not stop at the curtain edge, so the space reads as larger. This is why interior designers often recommend curtains in the same color family as the walls, slightly lighter or slightly darker, rather than a contrasting color.
A strong contrast between wall and curtain creates a visual boundary that chops the room into pieces. That boundary makes each piece feel smaller.
Hang the rod high and wide
This is not about color, but it matters more than color. Mounting the rod close to the ceiling and extending it several inches past the window frame on each side makes the window look taller and wider. The curtains frame a larger opening, and the room reads as bigger as a result.
Our measuring guide covers how to plan the rod position and measure from it.
Keep the glass clear when open
Curtains that stack against the wall when open leave the full glass exposed. Curtains that cover part of the glass even when open make the window, and the room, look smaller. Extending the rod past the frame is what makes this possible.
