What Are Bespoke Curtains?
What bespoke curtains means, how they differ from made-to-measure and ready-made, and when the distinction actually matters.
Bespoke is a word that gets used loosely in home furnishings, and curtains are no exception. Here is what it actually means, and how to tell the difference between genuinely bespoke, made-to-measure, and ready-made.
The original meaning
Bespoke comes from tailoring. A bespoke garment is made from scratch to a specific person's measurements and preferences, with fittings along the way. Nothing is pre-cut or pre-assembled. The result is unique to that person.
Bespoke curtains
In curtains, bespoke means the same thing: panels made entirely to your specifications, from the fabric and lining to the heading style, the interlining, and the exact dimensions. A bespoke curtain maker will typically visit your home, take measurements, discuss the design, and produce panels that are unique to your windows and your brief.
This is the highest level of custom, and the price reflects it.
Made-to-measure curtains
Made-to-measure is one step down. The fabric and construction are standardized, but the panels are cut to your exact dimensions. You choose from available options, enter your measurements, and receive panels made to those numbers. No home visit, no fittings, but a genuine custom size.
This is what most online custom curtain companies offer, including us.
Ready-made curtains
Ready-made panels come in fixed sizes. You choose the closest size to what you need and make it work, which usually means some compromise on length, width, or both.
Which one do you need?
For most homes, made-to-measure is the right answer. It gives you exact dimensions without the cost and lead time of fully bespoke work. Bespoke makes sense for complex projects: unusual windows, specialist fabrics, or rooms where every detail matters and budget is not the constraint.
Our panels are made-to-measure: one satin fabric in 22 colors, cut to any size you enter in the configurator. See the colors on the Fabric Colors page and measure your windows with our measuring guide.
