Tips for Redecorating Your Home with Custom Curtains
How to redecorate with custom curtains: why new panels are the fastest room makeover, and how to plan the change room by room.
Of all the changes you can make to a room, new curtains deliver the most transformation per dollar and per hour. They cover a huge surface, they change the light, and they install in an afternoon. If your home feels tired, start here.
Why curtains are the fastest makeover
Paint is cheaper but takes a weekend and changes only the background. Furniture costs serious money and takes months. Curtains sit in between: one large, visible surface you can swap in a day, in a color that resets the whole room's mood.
Because the window is usually the focal point of a room, changing what frames it changes everything else for free. The same sofa reads differently against Deep Burgundy panels than against Cream White ones.
Start with the room that bothers you most
Do not redecorate the whole house at once. Walk through your home and notice which room you avoid, or which one makes you wince. That is the room to do first.
Usually the problem is one of three things: curtains that do not fit (too short, too flat, too narrow), a color that fights the room, or fabric that looks tired. Name the problem before you shop, because the fix is different for each.
Fix fit before you fix color
The most common curtain problem is not the wrong color; it is the wrong size. Panels that stop above the floor, stretch flat across the window, or hug the frame make every color look bad.
Before you choose a new shade, redo the measurements: rod mounted several inches above the frame, extended a few inches past it on each side, panels at 1.5x to 2x fullness, ending just above or lightly touching the floor. Our measuring guide covers all of it. Many rooms need nothing more than the same color, sized properly.
Then change the mood with color
Once the fit is right, color is the fun part. A few reliable moves.
Warm up a cold room with Camel, Warm Sand, or Antique Gold. Cool down a hot, sunny room with Powder Blue or Steel Blue. Add depth to a flat neutral room with Forest Green or Deep Burgundy. Lighten a heavy room with Cream White or Milk Tea.
Coordinate the house loosely
Redecorating room by room works best when the rooms talk to each other. Because our panels are one satin fabric in 22 colors, you can give every room its own color while the fabric stays consistent throughout the house. It reads as a whole-home design even when you did it one payday at a time.
Test before you commit
New light, new furniture, new paint: any of these changes how a fabric color reads. Request swatches through the Contact page and live with them in the room for a few days. Browse the full range on the Fabric Colors page and price each window exactly in the configurator. A redecoration you can preview is a redecoration that sticks.
