Tips for Ordering Large, Extra Wide and Extra Long Curtains
Tips for ordering large, extra wide, and extra long curtains: measuring tall and wide openings, fullness at scale, and hardware that holds up.
Extra wide and extra long openings are where custom curtains stop being a luxury and start being the only option. No store stocks a panel for a two-story window or a wall of glass. Here is how to order large curtains with confidence.
Why oversized openings need custom
Ready-made panels top out at standard widths and lengths, usually 84 to 108 inches long. A tall window, a stairwell, a loft, or a wall of sliding glass blows past those numbers immediately. Doubling up panels to fake the width leaves visible seams and mismatched folds.
Custom panels are cut to your exact dimensions, so one panel can be as wide or as long as the opening needs.
The benefits of extra wide panels
A single extra wide panel sweeps across a large opening with no center seam and no gap. It stacks fully to one side, keeping wide views and doorways completely clear. For sliding doors and glass walls, one wide panel is usually the most practical and the best-looking answer.
For very wide spans, two generous panels that meet in the middle give you symmetry and lighter panels to draw. Either way, full 1.5x to 2x fullness is non-negotiable at this scale: wide, flat fabric looks like a bedsheet on a big stage.
The benefits of extra long panels
Extra long curtains turn tall ceilings into the feature they should be. A panel that runs from near the ceiling to the floor draws the eye up the full height of the room, and the long vertical folds are the single most elegant look in window treatments.
The same principle rescues ordinary rooms too: mounting the rod well above the frame and ordering the extra length makes any window look taller.
Measuring big openings safely
Large openings amplify small errors, and they are harder to measure. A few rules.
Use a steel tape and a helper. Long tapes sag over distance, and a second person holding the end keeps the reading honest.
Measure at several points. Wide openings and tall walls are rarely perfectly square. Measure the width at top and bottom, and the height at both sides, and note the differences.
Decide the rod position first. On a tall window the rod position changes the drop by many inches, so fix it before you measure the length. Our measuring guide walks through the full process.
Respect the hardware
Large curtains are heavy curtains, simply because there is more fabric. Use a rod and brackets rated for the span, mount into solid structure, and add a center bracket on wide rods so nothing bows over time. The most beautiful panels in the world look bad on a sagging rod.
See the number before you commit
Large custom panels are priced per panel by size, so you never have to guess what a dramatic window costs. Enter your exact width and drop in the configurator and the live price updates as you adjust. Browse the 22 colors on the Fabric Colors page, and for an opening this prominent, request swatches through the Contact page first. Big curtains make a big statement; make sure it is the one you want.
