Things to Consider When Ordering Custom Curtains for Bedrooms
What to consider before ordering custom bedroom curtains: light, privacy, length, color, and the honest limits of a single fabric.
Bedrooms ask more of curtains than any other room: they manage light, privacy, and mood all at once. Before you order custom panels for a bedroom, here are the things worth thinking through.
Be honest about light control
Start with the question that decides everything: how dark do you need the room?
Our satin softens and filters light beautifully, and drawn panels give real privacy and a dimmed, restful room. But satin is not a blackout fabric, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are a light-sensitive sleeper, work nights, or have a streetlight outside the window, plan to pair the curtains with a blackout blind or shade underneath. The blind does the blackout job; the curtains do the beauty job. Many well-dressed bedrooms work exactly this way.
If gentle dimming is enough, curtains alone will serve you well.
Privacy works both ways
Bedrooms need privacy at night, when the lights are on inside and it is dark outside. Drawn panels handle this fully. During the day, if the bedroom faces the street or a neighbor, decide whether you will keep the panels drawn or accept the window open. That answer affects how much you should care about light filtering versus light blocking.
Choose a restful color
Bedrooms reward low-energy colors: Dusty Mauve, Powder Blue, Steel Blue, Warm Taupe, or quiet neutrals like Greige. Keep contrast gentle. Tone-on-tone, with curtains a shade or two from the wall color, makes a bedroom feel wrapped and calm.
Save the saturated statements for rooms you entertain in. The bedroom is for sleeping, and the color should know it.
There is one exception: if your bedroom is large and flooded with natural light, a deeper color like Forest Green can feel cocooning rather than loud. Small or dim bedrooms, though, almost always want the soft end.
Go floor-length
Bedrooms suit floor-length panels: just above the floor for a tailored look, or lightly touching it for something softer. Sill-length is fine for a window over a radiator or a bed pushed against the wall, but full length is what makes a bedroom feel finished.
Do not skimp on fullness
Bedroom curtains are seen up close, morning and night, every day. Panels at 1.5x to 2x fullness hang in soft, deep folds that read as calm and considered. Skimpy panels read as temporary. Multiply your coverage width by 1.5 or 2 and divide by the number of panels.
Measure carefully, then measure again
Because every panel is made to your exact measurements, your numbers are the order. Use a steel tape, decide the rod position before measuring length, record whole or half inches, and follow our measuring guide. All sales are final, though anything arriving damaged or defective is replaced.
Then order swatches first through the Contact page. Bedroom light at 7am and 10pm is the only test that matters, and all 22 colors on the Fabric Colors page look different in it.
