Selecting the Best Custom Curtain Color for Each Room

How to choose the right curtain color for each room in the house, from living rooms and bedrooms to kitchens and home offices.

The right curtain color depends on the room. Each space has different light, different furniture, and a different job for the curtains to do. Here is a room-by-room guide.

Living room

The living room is where curtains have the most visual impact, because the windows are usually the biggest and everyone sees them. Two approaches work well.

A backdrop color, Warm Sand, Greige, or Beige, lets the furniture and art lead and gives the room flexibility as things change over time. A statement color, Deep Burgundy, Forest Green, or Cobalt Blue, anchors the room and gives it a clear identity. The mistake is drifting between them with a mid-strength color that neither anchors nor disappears.

Bedroom

Bedrooms benefit from curtains that feel calm. Soft neutrals like Milk Tea, Warm Sand, and Cream White work in almost any bedroom. Dusty Mauve and Powder Blue add a quiet note of color without disrupting the restful feeling.

If the bedroom is dark by nature, a lighter curtain keeps it from feeling heavy. If it gets strong morning light, a deeper tone like Steel Blue or Warm Taupe gives you more control.

Kitchen

Kitchens read best in light, fresh colors: Cream White, Off-White, Milk Tea, or Powder Blue. Light colors keep the room feeling clean and bright. Near the cooking zone, a slightly deeper tone like Warm Sand or Beige forgives more between cleanings.

Dining room

Dining rooms suit richer colors. Deep Burgundy, Forest Green, and Cobalt Blue all work well in a room designed for evening meals and conversation. They add warmth and a sense of occasion without needing to be formal.

Home office

Home offices benefit from curtains that manage light without making the room feel dark. Greige, Warm Sand, and Warm Taupe are good choices: they filter glare without closing the room in. If the office faces north and needs all the light it can get, Cream White or Off-White keeps things bright.

Children's rooms

Children's rooms are one place where a brighter or more playful color earns its keep. Powder Blue, Coral Rose, and Celadon all work well. Practical note: sill-length panels stay out of reach and out of trouble better than floor-length ones.

How to decide

See all 22 colors on the Fabric Colors page, then request swatches through the Contact page and look at them in the actual room at different times of day. Price your exact window in the configurator once you have decided.
