How Many Inches Are Standard Curtain Lengths?
Standard ready-made curtain lengths are 84, 96, and 108 inches. Here is why those fixed sizes rarely fit, and what custom length solves.
If you have ever stood in the curtain aisle wondering which length to grab, you have met the standard sizes. Ready-made curtains come in a small set of fixed lengths, and understanding what those sizes are explains why they so often look almost right instead of right.
The standard lengths
Ready-made curtain panels are typically sold in lengths of 84, 96, and 108 inches. Widths are usually 48 to 54 inches per panel. That is the whole menu at most stores.
Those numbers exist for manufacturing convenience, not because windows come in matching sizes. A store can stock three lengths far more easily than thirty, so three is what you get.
Why fixed lengths so rarely fit
Curtain length depends on two things that vary from house to house: where the rod sits and where you want the curtains to end.
Mounting the rod several inches above the frame makes the window look taller, but it also adds inches to the drop. Ending just above the floor versus lightly touching it changes the number again. By the time you add up your actual window, your ideal length often lands somewhere between the standard sizes.
That is when the compromises start. Buy the shorter size and the panels float visibly above the floor. Buy the longer one and they puddle when you wanted them to clear it, or you end up hemming brand-new curtains.
The telltale signs of a wrong length
You can spot a standard-length compromise from across the room. Panels ending a few inches above the floor look like high-water pants. Panels bunched on the floor in a room where that was never the plan look accidental. Panels hung at the top of the frame just to make a short size reach the floor make the window look squat.
None of these mean the homeowner has bad taste. They mean the sizes did not match the window.
When a standard length is fine
If your rod position and preferred ending point happen to land on a standard length, and your window width works with standard panels, ready-made is a reasonable buy. It happens, mostly with average-height ceilings and average windows. There is no prize for ordering custom when a stock size genuinely fits.
When custom length earns its keep
Tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, windows over radiators, bay windows, and any room where you want the rod mounted high all push you off the standard menu fast. So does wanting a specific ending point: exactly half an inch above the floor, or a deliberate light touch on it.
Custom curtains are cut to the exact length you enter, in whole or half inches. You measure once with a steel tape, decide where the rod sits and where the panels should end, and order the number your window actually needs. Our measuring guide covers the measuring side, and the configurator shows the price for your exact length as you enter it.
No hemming, no bunching, no almost. The panels arrive at the length you measured for, which is the whole point.
