Custom Curtains and Feng Shui

Custom curtains and feng shui: how window treatments affect the energy of a room, and how to choose panels that support good flow.

Feng shui treats windows as the eyes of a home: openings where energy, light, and opportunity enter. Curtains control those openings, which makes them one of the most important soft furnishings in feng shui terms. Here is how the principles apply, and how to choose curtains that support them.

Windows are energy gates

In feng shui, chi enters through doors and windows, and what covers those openings shapes how energy moves through the room. Bare windows let energy rush in and straight out. Heavy, neglected coverings stagnate it. Well-chosen curtains regulate the flow: open to invite energy in by day, drawn to hold warmth and rest by night.

That daily rhythm is itself good feng shui. Curtains that open fully and close fully, easily, keep the room's energy moving with the day.

Keep the flow clear

Feng shui dislikes obstruction, and this has practical curtain implications. Panels should stack clear of the glass when open, which means mounting the rod a few inches wider than the frame on each side. A curtain that permanently covers part of the window blocks both light and, in feng shui terms, the room's connection to the outside world.

Length matters too. Curtains that end awkwardly mid-wall create a visual interruption, and interrupted sightlines read as interrupted flow. Floor-length panels give the eye a clean, unbroken line.

Color by intention

Feng shui associates colors with the five elements, and you can use them as a loose guide room by room.

Earth tones like Beige, Warm Sand, and Camel bring stability, and suit living rooms and bedrooms. Water tones like Steel Blue and Powder Blue support calm and reflection, and suit bedrooms and quiet corners. Fire tones like Deep Burgundy and Coral Rose bring energy and warmth, best in social rooms rather than sleep spaces. Metal tones like Metallic Gray and Cream White support clarity, and suit offices. Wood tones like Forest Green support growth, and suit living rooms and studies.

You do not need to follow this rigidly. The feng shui principle underneath is simpler: choose colors whose energy matches what the room is for.

Condition is part of the practice

Feng shui pays attention to the state of things. Dusty, faded, or damaged curtains are stagnant energy made visible. Whatever you hang, keep it clean and in good repair, and replace it when it tires.

Fit is respect

A made-to-measure panel embodies a quiet feng shui idea: things in a home should belong where they are. A curtain cut to the exact window, hung at the right height, at proper fullness, looks settled, and settled rooms feel good to be in.
